KDOT’s Planning and Programming (P&P) Grants are for communities and schools that need a SRTS plan to help improve safety for and increase the number of students walking, biking, and rolling. The application period is open through May 3, 2024. You can find more information about the grant program (including our current recipients!), watch an informational webinar, and apply here.

Plan a winter walking event!

The fun shouldn't stop when the temperatures to drop! A winter walking event is a simple way to keep students walking, biking, and rolling throughout the winter. Here are some ideas from programs around the country:

  • Print out winter walk bingo or scavenger hunt cards for students to use on their way to or from school

  • Place pages of a winter walk story along major walking routes to make the stroll to school a literary adventure!

  • Hold a winter clothing drive/swap before or during your event to make sure all students have the right clothes for the weather.

  • Share cocoa bomb recipes or offer cocoa packets for students to take home to enjoy. If allowable, have a cocoa break for walkers and bikers at school.

  • If there's snow on the ground, host a snowman or snow angel making competition before school on the event day.

  • Promote the event with posters or social media posts. Free online graphics programs can make these graphics look fancy without much effort!

Make sure to send any fun stories or photos to Ann Katt, KDOT Safe Routes to School Coordinator, at ann.katt@ks.gov.

2023 Walk Bike Roll Kansas

In September 2023, we held KDOT's first active transportation summit, Walk Bike Roll Kansas, an in-person event for transportation professionals, advocates, and community members from across the state. At the summit, we deepened our understanding of the Kansas Active Transportation Plan and built valuable partnerships as we learned how to improve walking, biking, and rolling in our communities. Learn more about how it went here.
